![]() ![]() It all has the ring of a classic whodunit. “Who the f- was she?” Soon, a lover called Pete (Hugh Quarshie, most famous as Ric in Holby City) and friends that neither Ros nor Becca knew about hove into view. “She’s double-folding tin foil and making a lovely life for herself, pretending she’s in bloody Anglesey,” says Jones’s discombobulated Becca as she roots around. It’s not a B&B, but that aforementioned house, a place that looks like it had been lived in for years, with photos of Becca and Ros on the walls. ![]() As Becca and Ros turn up, baffled, to an Isle of Man police station ready to repatriate their mother’s body and wanting questions answered, they are first directed to the place she was staying. They never questioned the regular caravan holidays to Anglesey she apparently took with her pal Maureen.īut it turns out Anglesey was a cover: for years Mary has been leading another life. They thought Mary had been living in benign contentment with their father in Manchester. The trouble is, Mary shouldn’t be there: at least not according to her daughters Becca and Ros (played, respectively, by Jones and Nurse Jackie’s Eve Best), who have no idea what brought their late mother to the island. This corner of Ireland is actually standing in for the Isle of Man, where Jones’s story is set, and where, at the start of episode one, the body of a septuagenarian woman called Mary washes up dead on a beach. Overlooking the tiny uninhabited island of Ireland’s Eye, Howth, with its sweeping sea views and medieval ruins, is an entrancing and slightly unearthly place that entirely suits Maryland’s mood. It has been manifested as a large pebbledash dwelling on the Howth peninsula, east of Dublin, where filming for Maryland is taking place. ![]() I was fascinated by the possible logistics of that.’ I went to a spa with my friend Susan Lynch and I couldn’t stop talking about it – the idea of two sisters who get left this weird house – and a woman with a double life. I still have the bit of paper and it just says, ‘House – Double life – Sisters’. But this is the premise of Maryland, an enthralling, exquisitely calibrated three-part drama created by Vigil and Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones. It’s not something you’d expect from a 70-year-old woman. Leading a double life is normally a male prerogative, in real life as well as in fiction. ![]()
